The Wrestling Season

November 5 – 15, 2015

“You think you know me, but you don’t.”  An unsubstantiated rumor about two close friends, Matt and Luke, ignites the action in this account of how complicated it is to be a teenager today. Rumors of one person’s sexuality compounds more rumors about other students—as the humor and turmoil of high school play out on a single wrestling mat. The action is overseen by the Referee, who officiates with hand signals and commands. Using images, movement, and sound, each individual’s stories are interwoven to create a theatrical event that challenges and reveals their search for identity in a world that keeps shifting underneath them.

The Wrestling Season is a production specifically for teens and adults that explores the issues of peer pressure, sexual orientation, the search for identity, and the destructive power of rumors. Staged as a high school wrestling match, the show uses the rules of wrestling as metaphors for social relationships and status.

Following each performance, there will be a unique opportunity to talk with the actors in character regarding their choices in the play.

“… A writer with a true sense of how young people speak and handle confrontation.  Never before has the mantra of “sticks and stones” seemed so trite.  Names can indeed hurt, break, and destroy.”
