Young Professionals Presents

YPs are dedicated, mature students - ages 13 and up - who seek advanced training through mentorship and exposure to a wide range of theater experiences. The Young Professionals program is dedicated to building a community of
theater peers and parents, providing them with resources, opportunities, information, and guidance.

  • Mentorship & Email Updates – Available for advice, research, YP casting info, updates, opportunities, and any special requests

YP Workshops & Events

  • Professional Performances: Tickets to shows at OCT, Imago Theatre, Miracle Theatre, Portland Opera, & A.R.T.
  • Networking Social: Start the year with a fun social to meet fellow YPs and learn how to best use the program
  • Parent Informative: Parents attend a comprehensive Q&A with staff, plus learn how to best use the program
  • Developing Dialects: Val Landrum leads a fast-paced workshop to strengthen ear and voice for acquiring accents
  • Evaluation Workshop: A fun night of ensemble and solo work, with individual feedback – mandatory for new YPs
  • Improv Workshop: Connect improv skills to acting skills with improv’er Laura Faye Smith – for new & returning YPs
  • Special Effects Make Up Demo: Designer James Sharinghousen demonstrates air brush and prosthetic techniques
  • Broadway 140: For musical & non-musical theater YP’s – In 140 minutes, create a performance Broadway-style
  • Portland Opera’s Sing & Chat: A returning favorite! Live performances and valuable insight from professional performers
  • GRIMM! Tour the set of GRIMM & talk to some of the creative/production team behind Portland’s TV sensation
  • 2 Professional Forums: Meet an award-winning Hollywood screenplay writer, and an acclaimed Broadway producer
  • Kabuki Workshop: Explore Kabuki movement, voice, & fight dance in an active workshop – TBD
  • End of Year Social+: A fun last social, vote to include monologue coaching or ballroom dance instruction in the event

YP Training Opportunities

  • Coaching: One-on-one monologue and professional coaching for auditions and interviews (by request)
  • Apprenticeships: Directing, Design, and Technical apprenticeships on OCT’s professional productions (by interview)
  • Assistant Teach: Teach alongside professionals during OCT summer 2013 classes – paid (by interview, age 16+)
  • Direct Link: Returning YPs, post your acting profile online for Portland theaters with a personal reference (by request)
  • College Consultation: YP only resource links, information, letters of recommendation, and monologue coaching
  • YP Reps: Select, experienced YP representatives work shows/events – most paid – & attend special workshops

YP Performance Opportunities

  • YP Company Season: YP cast and crew for 3 shows, lead by professional director – paid (by audition)
  • YP Co. Presents Bully Plays: YPs perform a staged reading of original high school-submitted bully plays (by audition)
  • OCT & Professional Theaters: YPs are recommended to main-stage & local directors, have early access to OCT sides & scripts, & can request show-specific coaching – OCT main-stage shows are paid (by audition)

YP Add-Ons [Not included in annual fee]

  • YP Master Classes: College-level concepts/methods, training, and peer interaction – with tuition (at skill level)
  • Headshot Day: Work with Colleen Cahill Studios to get headshots at a reduced price (50% off package)
  • Ashland Adventure: Back by popular demand – Attend OSF shows, workshops, tours, & explore Ashland
